hi. ineed some advice. i'd like to run a dedicated server in addition to my regular machine. i want to be able to have it run 24-7. i have rr cable. i don't have a fortune to spend but would like to know where the money should be spent. i'd like to use win98 . do i need an expensive video card? monitor, sound card ect or can i just have a plain machine? i would appreciate some suggestions. i'd like to run a server that has no cheats or other goofiness. thanks, rick

First off... we already have posted a basic and advanced server guide for getting a dedicated Q3A server started... just find the link and the left-hand side of our main page. All sorts of info to help get you the right config.
Now... as far as hardware/OS/bandwidth is concerned... if you do plan on running a public server on your cable connect, you *could* get away with having an 8 player port but you'd need to set your rate very low... around 1500-2000. Roadrunner caps your upload speed to 128kbps http://63.167.10.249/admincentral/ubb/frown.gif It would probably be best to limit the port to 4 people, that way you can raise the rate setting a bit for a smoother game for your clients.
Hardware - the four things to focus on are CPU, memory, hard drive and the network card. The better and faster they are the smoother gameplay will be to people playing on it. This is where the OS comes into play as well. Using linux will not comsume nearly as much CPU/memory as windows would, but it is a bit more difficult to setup, plus hardware support under linux is not as robust as windows. Assuming you are going to use windows... for a 4-8 port dedicated server, you could get away with a p2-300 or so... minimum 128MB memory. SCSI hard drive is recommended but the newer 7200rpm IDE drives out today do nicely as well. For a NIC... I use 3com (3C905 series) but netgear also makes a good NIC, as does intel. Eveerything else is secondary... a cheap vid card will do, and you dont even need a sound card.
I would NOT recommend using win98 for a server, period. Go with either linux, winNT4 server or win2000 server/adv. server. Lots of reasons why NOT to go with win9x as a server... just believe me when I say NOT to use it http://63.167.10.249/admincentral/ubb/smile.gif
Hope this helps... any other questions, feel free to ask.
