View Full Version : sv_minping lets in lpbs?!?

I run two servers: one for modem players and one open to everyone and the only difference is that I set sv_minping on the modem player server to filter out the cable/dsl crowd. However with minping set to 250 I STILL get people in the game occasionally with steady sub 200 pings. Last night there was a player with a steady 60 ping in there.

Does minping only check when the person first connects and then never again? If so I can see how the ping could be momentarily spiked during connection (have seen Q3 do that before) and thereby let them in. If that is the case, then I guess I need to get a mod that does periodic ping checking during play and kicks players who violate the limit. I used OSP tourney for this on my Q2 servers and assume that OSP for Q3 does it as well. However are there other server side packages that do this? I don't really need the other features of OSP, just the admin enhancements.

Howdy!

I believe the minping value only compares the "client connected with x challenge ping" value. this is not the same ping value that players will display during a game. As far as I know, Quake does not re-verify this value.

Look at your console log for the above phrase to see if they are at or above your minping setting. I seem to recall earlier versions (test) of Q3 had problems with this, but I do believe they fixed them.

Do ALL players that connect have challenge values exceeding your minping setting? What happens to these players when you adjust this value up to 300, or 400? <-- Just a test. Are they prevented from joining? Does your server connection fluctuate to allow a player with a normally low ping to be viewed as an HPB? <-- Seems likely, but I don't know your setup.

I am not familiar with any server side packages. Individual mods, like your milage, may vary. http://gameadmins.com/ubb/smile.gif But this seems the only logical means to periodically query a connection, and then take appropriate action.

Adjusting the value up and down does filter them out, but it also catches legitimate modem players (I have gone as high as 250). I beleive that there is something in the game that can let a connecting players ping be high during the challenge phase which lets them back in. I used to run OSP Tourney on my Q2 servers and that worked well because it periodically checked ingame ping and kicked anyone whose ping averaged below the threshold. But it appears that Q3 OSP does not have this feature. Rhea prob. figured there was no need since id put a filter in. Sigh. Oh well, I have dropped it back to 200 and will just have to manually ask lpbs to move to our other, open, server and if they don't, kick em.

Thanks,
